Different Degrees of Burns

Burn injuries can be classified as a first, second, third, or fourth degree burn. Fourth degree burns are the most severe and debilitating.

  • First Degree: Characterized by minor burns that only affect the outer layer of skin called the epidermis. Skin often swells and can be red in color.
  • Second Degree: Characterized by painful red skin, swelling, blisters, and blanching. These types of burns also result in damage to the epidermis and the dermis, in addition to irritated hair follicles and sweat glands.
  • Third Degree: Characterized by leathery, white, or charred translucent skin. These types of burns are also usually painless as a result of a loss of sensation. Healing can take several months and require extensive rehabilitation and permanent scarring.
  • Fourth Degree: Characterized by more catastrophic and life-threatening injuries that include permanent nerve, muscle, and bone damage. Unfortunately, skin grafting, amputation, or even death may occur with these types of burn injuries.

The level and length of care and treatment after an accidental burn injury depends on the severity trauma experienced. Our Arizona burn injury attorneys know that the higher the degree of burn suffered equates to more intensive medical care and financial resources. We know how to make insurance companies pay. We also know how to find immediate medical care with delayed billing to cover the urgent needs of those needing this type of assistance.
